Father of Missouri quarterback Maty Mauk undergoes surgery for cancer

Tuesday, Missouri announced the junior quarterback has been suspended for this Saturday's noon game for violating team rules.

Two years ago, South Carolina faced Missouri quarterback Matty Mauk, who was just getting a chance to start for the Tigers.

The athletic department said that Latham was awaiting the resolution of a proceeding with the school's office of student ethics.

Tackle Nate Crawford injured his left ankle and is out this week. His father, Mike, underwent surgery for treatment of colorectal cancer Monday.

As for the game plan, "I don't think we'll change", Pinkel added. Mauk certainly has confidence, but that's a trait coaches tend to like to see in quarterbacks. Instead, he talked confirmed that Drew Lock, a true freshman, will start against South Carolina.

"They might be more of a drop back team now, but they will be ready", said Spurrier. "We just kind of put it out when he comes in here, but if he wants to talk about it outside, we'll openly talk about it obviously". So who knows, maybe he plays better than the guy before him.

Lock's sample size (seven) is much smaller than Mauk's (40), but we can still glean a few things that are hopefully useful.

Moore won't get a chance to get a hit in on Mauk. MU missed a field goal on his second-quarter possession against UConn, and in Saturday's loss at Kentucky, Lock drove the Tigers into field-goal range but got sacked on third down, leading to a Mizzou punt.

Before the news of Mauk's suspension broke on Tuesday, former defensive star Michael Sam voiced his opinion on Missouri's quarterback situation on Monday, favoring Lock because of what he's showcased through the first few games of the season.
