October 2015: When do the clocks change and why?

Germany was first to implement the idea in April 1916. Although William died before his ideas were adopted, it was his pamphlet that paved the way for British Summer Time.

Clocks will change this weekend with the evenings starting to draw in.

Shorter days and the end of daylight saving time are associated with SAD (seasonal affective disorder), a form of clinical depression that is believed to affect about 5 percent of the US population; it may set in as people have less daylight to enjoy after they got off work.

It was first proposed by the great great grandfather of Coldplay singer Chris Martin.

Next year, daylight saving time starts again on March 27, 2016 when the clocks are turned forward an hour, ensuring more light in the evening.

Not all countries take part in daylight saving.

Clocks went forward at 1am Irish Time on Sunday morning.

The maximum 16 hours and 50 minutes of sunlight - on the longest day in June (the summer solstice) - dwindles to just seven hours and 40 minutes in December (the winter solstice).

The old expression goes, "spring forward, fall back".

Clocks are altered twice a year, in spring and autumn. This time zone is often called British Summer Time. Since the summer of 1997, Latvia shifts to DST on the last Sunday of March and back on the last Sunday of October.

Not too far from now, we can sleep in an extra hour as we "fall back" into Daylight Standard Time.

Would you want a change?
