Manhunt underway after Ky. man shoots Tenn. police officer

The Kentucky State Police are asking for the public's help in finding 62-year-old Floyd Ray Cook of Lebanon, Kentucky.

Then as he was pulled over in Burkesville, Kentucky, Cook fired at police and fled on foot. Nelson said Valencia was wearing a bulletproof vest, which saved his life.

Police believe Cook may have access to a beige colored 2006 Ford Ranger with KY registration plate 8658-GB and may also be in the company of 50-year-old Troy E. Wayne, of Raywick, KY.

About an hour later, Cook was involved in a shootout with officers in Cumberland County, KY, according to Kentucky State Police.

"We're bringing formal charges today against Floyd Ray Cook in connection with Saturday's shooting of Officer Ahscari Valencia", 13th Judicial District Attorney General Bryant C. Dunaway told the Herald-Citizen this morning.

Classes were called off Monday in Cumberland County as the manhunt continued. Valencia has been an officer with the department for 1 ½ years.

A man shot a police officer in Algood on Saturday afternoon, but he didn't stop there.

Authorities said Cook is considered armed and risky and urge anyone who sees him not to approach him. The couple living inside the home managed to get away and call 911.

He's described as white, 6 feet tall and 160 pounds with blue eyes, gray balding hair and gray facial hair. During the 1970s and 1980s, he was convicted of a series of crimes in Kentucky, including charges on rape, assault, rioting, robbery, and burglary. The trooper was not hit and returned fire. He was convicted of raping a 19-year-old in Marion County in 1971, records showed. During a routine check on the whereabouts of registered sex offenders several months ago, police discovered that Cook was no longer living at the noted address.

Deputies there took out a warrant for his arrest and started searching for him.
