Rancher Dies in Shoot-out After Police Kill His Raging Bull

The Idaho State Police is reporting that an officer involved shooting has left one man dead and a deputy injured.

It all started when a Subaru station wagon crashed into a bull outside of Council, Idaho, on Sunday night. But the other injured party made their job almost impossible, as the furious animal began charging. When emergency workers were trying to rescue the driver of the auto, Jack Yantis-the bull's owner-arrived on the scene with a rifle.

The gentleman involved, Mr. Yantis, was a well-known cattle rancher around here. "The events that transpired over the course of the next few minutes are under investigation, but at this time, it is believed that two deputies and Mr. Yantis all fired their weapons", according to the release.

The Adams County sheriff's deputies have not been named. The bull, sadly, was shot and killed at the scene. Instead, gunfire was exchanged between two deputies and Yantis. She was taken to a nearby hospital and listed in critical condition.

Yantis died at the scene, and one deputy suffered a minor injury.

"The likelihood of somebody doing something wrong with multiple agencies involved, it's just extremely low because you would have to have all these people acting together and what's their incentive?" he said. "This is going to be a big hit to this community".

The two people who were involved in the accident were transported to Boise by air ambulance with unknown injuries. Both deputies have been placed on paid leave.

An Idaho rancher is dead after a shooting incident with police.

Yantis was raised on a cattle ranch 6 miles north of Council and lived in the area his entire life, Fisk said.
