Video of Mumbai Police Allegedly Beating a Couple Goes Viral

A young couple got brutally assaulted by Mumbai police in Andheri police station has gone viral creating outrage on social media. The Andheri Police however, claimed the duo were in an inebriated condition and scuffled with each other on the night of November 1 and that police only tried to pacify them.

The couple was allegedly involved in some argument in a public area after which they were detained by the police and taken to the police station, where they were allegedly subjected to physical violence.

A video shot by one Ghulam Shaikh, who heads an NGO and was present at the police station, appears to show seven cops beating the couple. The video captured this moment, Dhumal said, alleging it was recorded to malign police force's image. The police later summoned the parents of the two youngsters to settle their disputes. Police commissioner Ahmed Javed ordered a probe into the incident.

"The couple were under heavy influence of alcohol and were fighting with each other on the road near Andheri Metro Station".

There have been similar incidents in the recent past also in Mumbai. About two months ago, a girl had been thrashed outside the Lalbaug Ganesh mandal in central Mumbai by some women constables. The video went viral on the social media.
