Video Surfaces Of Alameda Deputies Beating Suspect

Petrov can be heard grunting in pain as he writhes around on the ground and several officers circle him.

Public Defender Jeff Adachi said the video shows excessive force.

The Alameda County Sheriff's Office says the suspect stole a auto, rearranged a Sheriff's vehicle, and ended up in a chase from San Leandro to San Francisco, where he smashed his auto on Stevenson Street and ran.

The suspect, Stanislav Petrov, 29, reportedly rammed the deputies' cars, knocking one of the officers down before fleeing the scene.

According to the San Francisco Examiner, the two Alameda County Sheriff's Deputies are on paid leave while they are being investigated. The first deputy tackles and punches the man and then both proceed to hit him with their batons for almost a minute, repeatedly striking the man in the head and all over his body.

Sheriff Gregory Ahern placed the deputies on leave Sunday, two days after launching an investigation into the Thursday incident, said Sgt. J.D.

Kelly said: 'We're going to do a complete and thorough investigation into this incident and figure it out'.

Deputies had been patrolling a hotel parking lot in the 17200 block of Foothill Boulevard in San Leandro when they spotted a stolen 2015 Mercedes C300 sedan, Kelly said. The second deputy arrives and starts hitting the man with his baton.

It's not pretty. Tamara Aparton, spokesperson for the Public Defender's office told the SF Examiner, "It's extremely disturbing...[The victim] doesn't appear to be resisting at all".

The San Francisco Public Defender's Office likely will not handle the case because it involves a police agency out of its jurisdiction, and Petrov is being held at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin. "It's dismaying to see him lying there bleeding and calling for help and not getting it for a while".

"Any time there's a question of police misconduct it's always better to have an independent investigation", she said.
