Google engineer says you shouldn't buy OnePlus USB Type-C cables

In the meantime, he's hoping OnePlus gets the message and starts making products which are fully compliant with the standard so folks won't have to worry in the future.

"Since you are creating a USB Type-C plug to a USB 2.0 Micro Type-B receptacle assembly, you must use a resistor of value 56kΩ".

OnePlus's USB Type-C Adapter, now sold on its website and , is getting bad for using a wrong electronic component, which causes devices phones, tablets, and laptops supporting the new connector to fail.

Do NOT buy this #USB #TypeC to Type-A cable from +OnePlus. He also notes in his thread that none of the charges including vehicle chargers are spec compliant, but vendors are working with Google on the development of new charging cables.Googler Benson Leung warned his followers on his Google+ page that they shouldn't purchase OnePlus's US$7 USB Type-C to Type A cable if they intend to use it on their Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X or Chromebook Pixel. This could lead to a high chance that the cable will damage a user's charger brick, PC USB port, hub and even phones. According to him, the cable does not conform to the standard Type-C specifications, particularly the 3A identifier resistor, which is responsible for letting the devices know the type of cable it's connected. Basically, OnePlus wants to say that their USB Type-C cable and adapter are meant for the sole goal of charging the OnePlus 2 alone.

What's wrong with this snazzy red-and-white liveried cable, you might wonder? When connecting to such devices, the device will attempt to draw 3A current despite the adapter not supporting it, thereby potentially damaging the device. The demand for USB Type-C connectors increased when Google launched the Nexus 5X, which doesn't ship with a Type-C-to-Type-A connector. Leung has highlighted the OnePlus USB-C products as being "out of spec".

When asked which USB Type-C he would recommend instead, Leung replied with the alarming claim that "None of the ones presently available are spec compliant". The cable is safe for use with OnePlus' own phones because they do not support fast charging.
