Poland refuses to accept refugees after Paris attacks

Slovakia rejected the refugee plan and the country's prime minister Robert Fico said on Saturday: "We have been saying that there are enormous security risks linked to migration".

The European Union is already deeply divided over how to handle the more than 800,000 migrants who have entered the bloc this year, mostly fleeing war and poverty in the Middle East and Africa.

Warsaw will not accept European Union quotas for relocating refugees without "security guarantees", ministers from Poland's incoming conservative government said hours after the terrorist attacks in Paris.

The document raised the possibility that Islamic State militants have made good on their threat to enter and attack Europe from within the wave of Syrian refugees.

"This is a key condition that today was put under a giant question mark in all of Europe", Konrad Szymanski said.

Poland's incoming Prime Minister Beata Szydlo lit a candle at the French Institute in the southern city of Cracow on Saturday.

"It is understandable that countries need to take whatever measures they need to take to protect their own citizens against any forms of terrorism", said United Nations spokesman Stephane Dujarric.

"Can you imagine a situation in which we send our troops to fight for Syria, while hundreds of thousands of Syrians sip coffee on Unter den Linden" - a boulevard in Berlin - "or at the old town square and watch how we fight for their security?" "Tens of thousands of young men disembark from their rubber dinghies with iPad in hand and instead of asking for drink or food, they ask where they can charge their cellphones".

"The attacks mean there's a need for an even deeper revision of the European policy regarding the migrant crisis". Apart from a planned deal with Turkey to help fortify the EU's sea border with Greece, the response has focused on boosting identity checks while keeping borders open. "As a result, there is no reason to reconsider in broad terms Europe's policy toward refugees".

German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere warned against equating the latest terrorist attack in Europe with the peaceful migrants to for whom Europeans should be welcoming and supportive. He said Juncker's reaction in this regard was insufficient.

Szymanski will take up his position on Monday as part of a government formed by the last month's election victor, the conservative and eurosceptic Law and Justice (PiS) party.

The outgoing liberal government had declared readiness to take in more migrants than the 9,287 assigned to it under European Union proposals without saying how far it would go beyond that figure.

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker firmly defended on Sunday the EU's hotly-contested plan to redistribute refugees across Europe despite calls by Poland to scrap the scheme after the deadly attacks in Paris. "Those who organized, who perpetrated the attacks are the very same people who the refugees are fleeing and not the opposite", he said. "We will only continue in everything we have done in this field. We can expect even bigger mobilization of security forces".
