First Refugees Arrive in the United Kingdom Under Prime Minister David Cameron's

Recent polling by YouGov has shown that the Paris attacks have significantly reduced support for the relocation of Syrian refugees into Britain.

She said: "The actions of the few must not be allowed to undermine the values, the freedoms and the way of life of the many".

All have been living in refugee camps in countries neighbouring Syria like Lebanon and Jordan.

On Monday, Stirling council - which is expecting its first refugee family in December - said the terrorist attacks in Paris would have "no effect whatsoever" on its plans, insisting: "We have a responsibility to provide safety and refuge for refugees and we will continue to honour this commitment".

"I think for people on the flight this is a really significant day for them because for many of them they will have been in the camps around Syria for months or years, experiencing all the hardships having fled horrific situations in Syria", he said.

Those who arrived in Scotland will be resettled across five local authority areas: Glasgow, Edinburgh, Inverclyde, Renfrewshire and North Ayrshire.

"Then there is a further check that is done once people are referred to the UK".

Dr Teresa Piacentini, a sociologist at the University of Glasgow, said the refugees coming to the United Kingdom will need help in lots of different ways.

A flight carrying 100 refugees landed at Glasgow Airport at 3.40pm today from Beirut.

"We are working with UNHCR [the UN High Commissioner for Refugees]", she said on the Andrew Marr show.

He added: "I would invite those in Europe who try to change the migration agenda we have adopted - I would like to remind them to be serious about this and not to give in to these basic reactions that I do not like".

Since the announcement a "steady stream" of refugees have already come to the United Kingdom but the start of a series of special charter flights will see the numbers arriving increase.

"You're always going to get the minority of people - and certainly in Scotland there is a minority of people - who will have a negative attitude to anyone who they see as being an outsider. The offers of support from ordinary people across Scotland who want to help alleviate the suffering of the vulnerable people caught up in this humanitarian emergency has been overwhelming", he said.

The government has said 20,000 refugees will be resettled in the United Kingdom by 2020 - with 1,000 due to arrive by Christmas.

The new arrivals in Scotland - around 15 families - are all from camps surrounding Syria and will be given five-year visas. The Home Office confirms to Newsweek that it has received offers of accommodation and support from more than 45 local authorities in the United Kingdom.

The group consists only of those willing to undertake a two-stage security screening process as the Home Secretary Theresa May allayed fears the refugees posed a security threat.
