Buzz Williams finds a clever way to honor Frank Beamer

"He always had time for us and never let football get in the way of being our father". We just didn't have enough at the end.

North Carolina is 5-2 ATS in its last seven games on the road. They're absolutely loaded with talent, sure, but this has been a remarkable job by Brian Kelly of preparing his players for when their time comes.

The emotions were flowing in Lane Stadium, as fans and players paid tribute to longtime head coach Frank Beamer in what would be his final home game in Blacksburg. "I want them to get a quality education, have a positive experience and mature as people in our program".

The hours are dwindling until Frank Beamer's final home game at Lane Stadium. In fact, Boston College, Wake Forest, Syracuse and Virginia each have won just three games this season and have a combined record of 12-28. I tell everybody, I've never had a bad athletic director and I've never had a bad president. "I'll say it again".

After losing the opener to SC, North Carolina has won 10 games in a row as it pushes for respect from the College Football Playoff selection committee.

The Tar Heels scored a touchdown to escape Blacksburg with an overtime win.

The Hokies, though, used a takeaway of their own to pull within 24-17 with 2:54 left on Brewer's 8-yard scoring pass to Bucky Hodges, and then got Williams fumble on a sack by Luther Maddy. With all that said, UNC is the best offense that Virginia Tech will face all season. It will also be a good chance to see the 12th ranked North Carolina team that dropped that ugly affair to SC to open the season but hasn't lost since.

"Our defense really stepped up and made a few big plays", Brewer said. We started playing fast and throwing the football a little bit. Bud Foster's defense came to play, as it has so often during Beamer's tenure, in limiting Williams (13-of-26 passing) and an explosive offense. NC State will look to sharpen themselves for North Carolina next week. Marquise Williams has not beaten the Hokies in his tenure as the starter. Elijah Hood, who ran for 115 yards, converted two of them into touchdowns. He hit Ryan Switzer for 18 yards on the first play and Davis for the winning touchdown. Travon McMillian rushed for 80 yards on 21 carries.

Following the game, Beamer did an interview with ESPN and then he addressed the fans, thanking them for their support. Before the team walked onto the field, a prerecorded message from Metallica for Beamer was shown on the video board.

This isn't a must-win situation, since the Wolfpack has already secured the six wins needed for bowl eligibility.

"I think it just builds on the atmosphere of the game and makes it more exciting and anticipating", said Trey Bell.
