United Nations chief calls for adequate sanitation on World Toilet Day

According to government data, more than 2 crore toilets have been built for rural households between December 2012 and February 2015, but the number of toilets being built for each year has been steadily decreasing for a few reason.

The Chieftainess has introduced a fine for families if their children drop out from school, and with the toilets and washing facilities in place, girls are now attending class. With her watchful eye and the help of better facilities, girls stay at school, eager to learn.

I was reminded of this experience recently when thinking about the upcoming global advocacy day-World Toilet Day. "Education to change people's attitudes towards sanitation is crucial if we are to realise the full health and economic benefits of sanitation". Toilets and good sanitation alleviate suffering and save lives - millions of them. The latter has 80pct of its population following a healthy sanitation habit.

It's no secret that India's many health crises are triggered or augmented by this severe lack of sanitation. There are in excess of 60million people of us living here in the United Kingdom and it's not hard to picture the chaos, disease, stench and illness that would happen if one in three of us had no access to sanitation.

Abbottabad and Swat districts in KP are stated to be as per standards of the public experts where open defecation is quite low. Many more have their physical and cognitive development stunted through repeated bouts of diarrhea; half of malnutrition is attributed to dirty water, poor sanitation and lack of hygiene. What's more, women and girls are at a greater risk of violence and sexual assault when they are forced to relieve themselves in the open. This SDG focuses on providing sanitation for everyone everywhere by 2030. It noted that diarrhoea, malaria and pneumonia were the most common killers of young children around the world, with 58% of those deaths having the potential to be prevented by clean water and sanititation.
