Tesla Recalls 90000 Model S Vehicles For Possible Seatbelt Issues

Tesla stressed that the recall is voluntary and not requested by federal regulators. According to Tesla, what happened is that the passenger turned around to speak to the other passengers at the back and at that moment, the seat belt came loose. Tesla repaired the defective seat belt.

Recalls are a normal part of doing business in the automotive industry, but when Tesla recalls 90,000 Model S vehicles for possible seatbelt issues... that's huge.

Tesla last issued a recall for the Model S wall chargers that keep the cars powered. Citing power and charging equipment, the touch screen console, sunroof, and body issues, CR gave the Model S a "less-than-average" reliability rating. Consumer Reports had previously given the Model S a glowing review.

The Model X SUV isn't affected by the recall.

The agency said to Tesla owners that the vehicles may be equipped with advanced driver assistance systems, but that the roads in Hong Kong are busy, and that drivers should stay alert at all times and maintain control of the vehicle.

It claims that fixing the fault will only take approximately 6 minutes. However, those concerned with their seat belt's safety can detect the condition by "very firmly" pulling on the lap portion of their seat belts with at least 80 pounds of force. If an owner would like, Tesla service centers will have technicians on hand to test out all seat belts. Keep in mind this isn't Tesla's first recall. Tesla mailed chargers to owners and updated the software in the cars remotely, so the cars didn't need to be brought into dealers. Airbag manufacturer Takata has been involved in the recall of millions of vehicles from multiple manufacturers after its airbags were found to spray occupants with metal shards as they inflated.

Ask The Big Question: Did Tesla maybe go to market too fast without enough testing?
