Bomb attacks kill 17 in Nigeria, Cameroon

Shortly after the incident, the Minister of Communication government' spokesperson praised the vigilante groups for their commitments to fight against Boko Haram.

Police who blamed one girl is said by Boko Haram detonated explosives strapped to her body at a military checkpoint safeguarding an entrance to the northeastern city of Maiduguri.

This week, not less than 60 people had lost their lives in Nigeria in suicide bombings attacks.

Boko Haram has mounted numerous attacks in Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Nigeria this year and is turning the border region near Lake Chad into a war zone, the United Nations refugee agency said last month.

Their grim toll of 6,644 dead for 2014 made Boko Haram more lethal than ISIS that year, according to the Institute for Economics and Peace. A dozen people were also injured.

There has been a wave of suicide and home-made bomb attacks against civilians in urban areas recently, particularly Maiduguri, which in October alone was hit six times, killing at least 54 people. Seventy-eight percent of the attacks were concentrated in only five countries: Pakistan, Nigeria, Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq.

Like ISIS, Boko Haram seeks to implement strict Islamic law through terrorism, and it has been disturbingly successful at recruiting disaffected youth to its cause. It has forced at least 2.6 million people from their homes, killing at least 17,000 people and abducting hundreds, including the 276 schoolgirls kidnapped in Chibok village in April past year that prompted an global outcry. A group of around 50 managed to escape.
