Russia's Putin in Iran for talks set to focus on Syria

"It is not accidental that the United States has prolonged its 30-year-long anti-Iranian sanctions, including the freeze of all Iranian assets in the U.S. banks and their foreign divisions, outlawed export from the USA to Iran and embargoed the import of any goods from Iran to the United States", Akhmetov said. The two countries have been fighting on the same front since the uprising broke out in 2011.

The Gas Exporting Countries Forum is sometimes referred to as the "Gas OPEC", because it brings together the leaders of natural gas exporting countries.

These new commitments build on previous Russian pledges to provide Iran with advanced missile-defense systems, which Tehran has sought to defend its nuclear infrastructure against possible attack.

Putin and Khamenei utilized the meeting on Monday to hammer home that they cherish the mutual trust between their two countries and intend to preserve it no matter what it takes.

"We expect that after sanctions are lifted Iran will prefer to work with the Russian Federation on many tracks especially in hi-tech areas such as aviation, aerospace, radio electronics, shipbuilding", Russian Deputy Premier Dmitry Rogozin said.

Putin also reiterated Russia's commitment to give Iran a $5-billion export loan for implementation of joint projects.

"This must be prevented through wisdom and active interaction, " Khamenei told Putin at the start of their meeting.

Khamenei said other than the controversial nuclear agreement this summer, Iran would not negotiate with the United States on any issue. Iran says it has sent advisers but no combat forces.

In a meeting with Algerian Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal, Rouhani added that Tehran and Algiers have close stance on regional developments, including the crises in Iraq, Syria, Yemen and North Africa.

While the Paris attacks are the proximate cause of this Western interest, Russia's military commitment in Syria positioned it to take advantage of the West's newfound focus on confronting Islamic State.

"Whereas some countries are only indulging in anti-terrorist oratory and taking demonstrative actions, our two countries have proved that this issue can be addressed seriously", he said in reference to Western powers who have failed to weaken ISIL in the past 18 months.
