Li-Fi 100 times faster than Wi-Fi

After deploying a Li-Fi internet system in a working office, the Velmenni team was able to transmit data at 1 Gbps, roughly 100 times faster than the average Wi-Fi speed.

Alice Woodhouse for The SCMP notes that Velmenni, an Estonian start-up business, hopes to harness the technology via basic LED bulb technology as per Professor Haas' discovery and invention, meaning that should the project take off and prove popular enough, it could potentially mean the end for bulky radio towers altogether - however, it may well be some time before we are due to see Li-Fi available from our cable and data carriers in general. He said that billions of light bulbs can be used as hotspots.

Unlike Wi-Fi, Li-Fi did not use radio signals and thus could be accessed even while travelling in the plane. The light waves can not penetrate walls which makes a much shorter range, though more secure from hacking, relative to Wi-Fi.

SIMON: It's not just Li-Fi's speed that's attractive, but the spaciousness of the light spectrum.

There certainly is room for Li-Fi and other visible light-based communication systems to grow in niche areas, but router manufacturers can rest easy for a while.

At present, Li-Fi is being developed as an alternative to Wi-Fi.

"Currently we have made a good illumination answer for a professional atmosphere where the info communication is done through lighting". While it's attractive to envision a network of connected lightbulbs all being used to transmit data between nodes, it's not clear if the benefits of faster wireless communication will outweigh the costs of constantly-on LED lights, as well as the cost of optical detectors requiring clear line-of-sight.

According to experts, 35 quintillion bytes of information exchange would be happening every month from 2019 onwards and radio signal transmission could not stay active for long. Because gentle can not pass through surfaces, think about it, that you don't have to be anxious about your annoying neighbour looking to compromise into your internet and stealing knowledge. LED lights are little electronic devices, a little bit like transistors.

Li-Fi is is a bidirectional, high speed and fully networked wireless communication technology similar to Wi-Fi.
