Americans oppose Syrian refugees in US

Gov. Bill Walker says we have no say in the decision.

Refugee admissions are determined by the U.S. Department of State, which processes applications received through the United Nations and conducts security screenings - a process that can take up to two years.

The House bill would add a requirement for the Homeland Security secretary, along with the head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Director of National Intelligence, to certify that each refugee being admitted poses no security threat.

The administration officials assured the governors that the refugees would undergo the most rigorous screening and security vetting of any category of traveler to the United States, the White House said in a statement. US adults also rate terrorism and the Islamic State, the terror group that claimed responsibility for the Paris attacks, as the top issue facing our country today.

The United States has accepted almost 2,200 Syrian refugees since the conflict began there in March 2011, according to government data - and that number is expected to grow significantly in the current year.

President Barack Obama would veto the legislation if it reaches his desk, the statement concluded.

Bush, however, outlined a scenario in which he would accept some of those fleeing Syria's civil war.

"Who are you going to call in Syria?"

Refugees and migrants fleeing Syria and others countries often arrive in their new homes with little or nothing.

A look at the screening process could calm their nerves.

Bush reiterated his preference for accepting refugees who are Christian, after Obama criticized him.

"We're very confident that we have the legal authority to suspend the resettlement program relative to Syrian refugees in the state of in and I think it is the proper course", he said. The governor's press office declined to give any more specifics on the new position, or explain how it differs from officials already at the state's resettlement program.

Ryan said the GOP bill would require a new standard of verification to filter out terrorists. At least 27 U.S. state governors have expressed opposition to Obama sending Syrian refugees to their states, with some ordering departments to halt all cooperation with federal refugee programs until tighter controls are implemented.

"Apparently they're scared of widows and orphans coming into the United States of America". Some are also trying to figure out how Texas can keep those refugees out of the state.

"We have to protect Americans, and not lose our soul as America in the process".

Sanders, a democratic socialist and senator from Vermont, said: "We will not succumb to Islamophobia".

Idaho Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter, using language similar to other Republican governors, wrote in a letter Monday to Obama that it makes no sense for the United States "to allow people into our country who have the avowed desire to harm our communities, our institutions and our people".
