Emission eye on diesel cars

Following the report from ARAI stating that several products from Volkswagen India had increased emission levels as compared to initial results, VW has acknowledged the notice issued and have chosen to recall around 3.24 Lakh diesel cars fitted with the EA189 series of engines.

The money is needed as the company faces multi-billion euro costs from fines, lawsuits and refits of 11 million diesel vehicles. Cars affected will be those which were manufactured and sold between 2008 and November 2015. In September, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency found the company guilty of installing illegal software in its diesel engines.

VW's EA 189 engine, fitted with the "defeat device", could lead to excess nitrogen oxide emissions.

The Robert Bosch company is named as a defendant in a Volkswagen emissions class-action lawsuit that names VW, Bosch, former VW CEO Martin Winterkorn and current CEO Michael Horn as defendants.

VolkswageThe Volkswagen Group has reportedly agreed the terms for an EUR20bn "bridging loan" with banks to help cover extraordinary costs arising from its diesel emissions scandal. This in comparison to 31,725 units in November 2014 and 23,883 cars sold in the U.S. last month. Anant Geete, Minister of Heavy Industries & Public Enterprises, said that government has also chosen to test all diesel vehicles to check for violations of emission norms in India. In India, it may have to recall about 100,000 cars after the automakers industry body - the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) - found a significant variation in the emission level in on-road vehicles compared with laboratory measurements.

The latest lawsuit says "as early as 2007, Bosch warned Volkswagen that using its software in vehicles that were driven on the road would constitute a criminal offense". "Once approved from the competent authorities, the respective brands of the Volkswagen Group in India will carry out necessary actions in a step-wise manner", the statement quoted.

The company said it remains "fully committed" to the Indian market and "will not deviate from its future planned investments, product plans and launches".
