Pope says fundamentalism 'disease of all religions'

"This isn't Communism", the pope insisted.

Pope Francis responded that an ongoing question for Catholic moral theology is whether condoms in that case are an instrument to prevent death or a contraceptive - in which case they would violate church teaching on openness to life.

In reality, he suggested, that's a false dilemma.

"I'm encouraged and inspired", said Erick Otieno, who stood along a route where the pope passed. "Is it obligatory to heal?' This question, 'Is doing this lawful, '...but malnutrition, the development of the person, slave labor, the lack of drinking water, these are the problems".

"We Catholics, we have a few, even many fundamentalists".

When asked about the so-called Vatileaks trial, the Pope said he "hasn't lost any sleep" over the trial investigating leaks that revealed alleged financial mismanagement in the Church. "The problem is bigger than that", he added, noting that Africans face numerous difficulties, caused by arms trafficking and economic exploitation as well as the scarcity of food and clean water.

"In terms of insight into Francis' heart and mind, I think this journey has been remarkable".

Regarding the pending "Vatileaks" trial, the pope said it's up to the judges to reveal the truth of what happened. The trial, due to resume at the Vatican today, has been adjourned until next week.

An image taken Sunday at a camp for the internally displaced showed Francis speaking while holding a microphone, his other hand poised horizontally.

Pope Francis speaks to journalists on the papal plane on his way to Strasbourg, France, Nov. 25, 2014. But during his first day in a city that has been brutally segregated along religious lines, Francis saw nearly only Christians.

Responding to a question about the dangers posed by religious fundamentalism, the Pope refused to point toward Islam as the source of the crisis.

Although the Kyoto Protocol on climate change was adopted in 1997, he said, "little has been accomplished".

"I am not sure, but I can say to you "now or never", he said.

"This trip, in many ways, has captured all of the core themes of Francis' papacy in miniature, from war and peace to interreligious dialogue to the environment to his passion for the poor", said CNN senior Vatican analyst John Allen.

"The pope's visit was significant to Africa, especially to our leaders and the church", said Zacharia Wanakacha Samita, a professor at Kenyatta University in Nairobi, Kenya.
