Los Angeles sheriff's deputies fatally shoot armed man

According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, the shooting happened around 11 a.m. near Long Beach Boulevard and Magnolia Avenue.

According to the official account, the deputies were responding to calls about a man firing a gun.

An eyewitness video broadcast on ABC7 shows the suspect turning his back on deputies when he was shot.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Homicide detectives were investigating a deputy-involved shooting that occurred today in Lynwood, after reports were received of a man being seen with a gun and shots being heard.

Officers say they found the father-of-three at a gas station around 11am and repeatedly asked him to drop his weapon.

The sheriff of LA county, Jim McDonnell, said in a statement: "I want to assure the public that the sheriff's department takes deputy involved shootings very seriously and that this investigation will be handled with the utmost professionalism and integrity".

Despite the police statements, however, the video shows no threatening behavior on Robertson's part.

Robertson fell to the ground and then tried to crawl away from the gunfire.

The suspect allegedly refused to drop the weapon and pointed it at the officers before being shot, police said citing investigators and witnesses.

A loaded.45-caliber handgun was recovered from the scene, LASD said.

Hernandez acknowledged the existence of the video and described the footage as "just one piece of evidence... that'll be analyzed against the physical evidence, the witness statements and the deputies' statements".

"'If the deputies reasonably believe the suspect with a firearm presents a danger by walking toward a gas station with vehicles and bystanders, they would be justified in using deadly force", said Stoughton.

Robertson's death ignited demonstrations at the scene shortly after the shooting. Relatives also said they didn't know anything about Robertson carrying a gun.

In a statement on Facebook, the sheriff's department confirmed the shooting and that the suspect died at the scene.
