Golden Globes 2016: Snubs and Surprises

Each received four nominations.

The movie has been nominated in the best motion picture? drama alongside "Mad Max: Fury Road", "The Revenant", "Spotlight" and "Room".

The inclusion of The Martian in the comedy/musical division was a source of controversy to start with.

"Instead we see "Room" and 'Spotlight, ' little indie movies, and that is sending a strong message to Hollywood that measurement does not matter they usually might should attempt more durable".

Alicia Vikander - Nominee for Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama "The Danish Girl" and Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture "Ex-Machina": "I am truly thrilled and grateful to the HFPA for both these wonderful nominations!" I am incredibly grateful for their nomination, as well as the recognition they have given to this film and to Alejandro's vision as its director.

Gaga has shared her thoughts about the nomination in a statement obtained by The Wrap, saying: "Thank you to the HFPA for this nomination, and to the talented cast, crew, and creators of 'American Horror Story'".

Steven Spielberg's well-regarded Cold War thriller "Bridge of Spies" received only one nomination for Mark Rylance's supporting performance as a Soviet spy.

And while it continues the long-standing tradition of Golden Globe wackiness, the list also rather bravely reflects the virtually unmeasurable nature of modern television. However, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association somehow liked it enough to nominate Ruffalo in this film, perhaps to make up not finding room in the best supporting actor category for his performance in "Spotlight". ABC fared the best of the lot, picking up four nominations in total, with most of those going to its high-minded anthology series "American Crime".

SNUB: Elizabeth Banks, "Love and Mercy" Although Paul Dano made the Golden Globes short list for his performance as a young Brian Wilson, Banks wasn't so lucky for playing his wife.

To get audiences to tune in on their big night this year, the HFPA sprinkled their nominations with as many glitzy stars as possible, as they always do.

Quentin Tarantino's "The Hateful Eight" also got left out in the cold.

The best and worst thing about the Golden Globe nominations every year is that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association swerves wildly from what people might expect from awards season.

-Actor, Drama: Liev Schreiber, "Ray Donovan"; Wagner Moura, "Narcos"; Bob Odenkirk, "Better Call Saul"; Rami Malek, "Mr. Robot"; Jon Hamm, "Mad Men".

The Golden Globe nominations are always a wild card, unpredictable and surprising, which is always part of the fun. One of the nominees for Best Screenplay, Emma Donoghue, also the book upon which the film is based.

It comes as no surprise that "Mad Max: Fury Road" is continuing to be a recurring nominee during the award season.

In the best motion picture - musical or comedy category, the nominees include "The Big Short", Matt Damon-starrer "The Martian", Jennifer Lawrence's "Joy", "Spy" and "Trainwreck".

Leonardo DiCaprio for "The Revenant", Eddie Redmayne for "The Danish Girl", Michael Fassbender for "Steve Jobs", Will Smith for "Concussion" and Bryan Cranston for "Trumbo".

The N.W.A biopic "Straight Outta Compton" got a boost on Wednesday when it was included among the Screen Actors Guild Award nominees for best ensemble drama.
