Family of 6 Syrian refugees arrives in Houston

The decision comes just hours after Texas asked a federal court for a temporary restraining order barring nine Syrian refugees set to arrive in the state on Thursday.

While fear of terrorism directed from or influenced by the Islamic State in places like Syria is legitimate, the refugee program already includes a vetting process that takes up to two years. "The Court has no institutional competency in assessing the risk posed by refugees".

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has been the most adamant of the governors refusing Syrian refugees - Texas is the only state that has actually asked the courts to intervene.

After arrival at their new home, refugees typically go through a learning process that includes such subjects as how to get around, how to find a job and, quite often, how to speak English well enough to get a job and function in a USA community.

The American Civil Liberties Union of IN says it will proceed with its lawsuit seeking to block Gov. Mike Pence's order barring state agencies from helping with the resettlement of Syrian refugees.

It was a long and risky journey to flee terrorism in Syria.

Meanwhile, 21 newly arrived Syrian refugees are being resettled in Texas and have not been blocked by the governor.

A family of eight Syrian refugees will arrive in Houston on Thursday, as well as a 26-year-old Syrian woman joining her mother in the area, according to a brief filed last week by the Department of Justice. A judge denied an attempt by state officials to block their entrance after Texas failed to show evidence terrorists infiltrated the refugee program.

Pence Tuesday that he wouldn't stop the distribution of federal aid to Syrian refugees once they are settled in the state.

A spokesman for A.G. Paxton responded to the ruling, saying the "safety and security of Texans is our utmost priority" and that the office will continue to demand information about arriving refugees.

This month, the state sued the federal government and a refugee group to block Syrian refugees, but backed off on a request for a restraining order last week, allowing several families to reach Dallas and Houston.

The Catholic Archdiocese of Indianapolis in the USA state of in, has resettled a family of Syrian refugees despite opposition from the state's governor, reports Reuters.

Republican Texas Attorney General Kenneth Paxton filed the latest request Wednesday saying there was new "evidence" that the refugees were a possible danger.

But Godbey said that "The fact that this Court is required to assess the risk posed by a group of Syrian refugees illustrates one of the problems with this case".

Texas is among almost 30 states that have vowed to keep out Syrian refugees since the Paris attacks.
