Delhi govt may exempt two-wheelers from even-odd formula

"We will allow all vehicles to ply on Sunday because of less traffic". "They (the government) are yet to approach us for a reasonable discussion on the scheme, which is imperative for its implementation", he said. They accused the Delhi government of destroying the city's transport system after which the decision becomes irrelevant.

Delhi Home Minister Satyendra Jain said the government will only allow emergency vehicles like PCR van, fire tenders, ambulances on the roads of the national capital.

The Delhi High Court had pulled up the government earlier this week for lack of a time bound action plan to tackle the "alarming" levels of Delhi's pollution and ordered it to submit one on January 21.

Minister Rai said 1,000 low-floor buses would be bought immediately to meet the need for more public transport when the number of vehicles falls steeply on the roads from January 1.

Meanwhile, The government is also planning on shutting down the three thermal plants in the city. "Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday will have even numbered vehicles on roads, and we do not care about which cars belonged to whom", Jain said.

Delhi Chief Secretary KK Sharma said that extra DTC buses will be started and collaboration would be sought with the Delhi Metro to run more number of trains to manage the commuters who will not be able to drive down to their destinations.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had announced that it is just an experiment and will be withdrawn if people face extreme difficulties.

A fine will be slapped on violators.

The Kejriwal-led government in Delhi recently made a decision to allow plying of odd-numbered cars on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and even-numbered vehicles on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

Odd Numbered Vehicles (1, 3, 5, 7, 9) on Odd Dates. On 2 January, cars with 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 will ply.

Though the Traffic Police has been asked to examine the scheme and come with suggestions after two days, there are reports that the Government is mulling to deploy civil defence volunteers to monitor the entry of vehicles for the first 15 days.
