Golden Globes nominations- Check it out here

Lesbian romance drama "Carol" and Wall Street misdeeds comedy "" led a diverse range of films honoured with Golden Globe nominations, with genres spanning indie thrillers to big budget sci-fi action adventures. The winners will be announced on January 10, 2016 on NBC. Both "Outlander", with its European setting and cast, and "Mr. Robot", an edgy, cinematic drama beloved by TV geeks, are typical of the worthy but more out-there choices often made by the HFPA, which past year awarded Showtime's "The Affair" best drama series (but failed to even nominate it this time around).

In-demand Fassbender is in the running for Best Performance by an actor in a Motion Picture for his performance in "Steve Jobs". This time the film landed a "Best Picture- Drama" and "Best Director" nomination for George Miller. They are: "American Crime", "American Horror Story: Hotel", "Fargo", "Flesh and Bone", and "Wolf Hall".

The nominees for best motion picture drama are Spotlight, The Revenant, Carol, Mad Max: Fury Road, and Room.

- Picture, Musical or Comedy: "The Big Short", "Joy", "The Martian", "Spy", "Trainwreck". The premium-cable network and its period-piece, European co-productions such as "The White Queen" and "Dancing on the Edge" have fared well at the Golden Globes in recent years.

With four nods is Alejandro Inarritu's follow-up to his Oscar-winning "Birdman", the frontier epic "The Revenant", which was nominated for best picture, drama, and best actor for Leonardo DiCaprio. It's more that the HFPA, like many other awards groups this season, was especially fond of movies most audiences have yet to see - either because they haven't been in theaters yet or were small, independent films that didn't find much of an audience earlier this year.

Spotlight is in the running for Best Picture, Drama but all of the central actors - Ruffalo, Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams, and Liev Schreiber have been overlooked in the acting categories.

Some of the actual best actresses: Brie Larson ("Room") and Saoirse Ronan ("Brooklyn") earn Best Actress, Drama nods.

The nominees in the best supporting actress category are Jane Fonda ("Youth"), Jennifer Jason Leigh for "The Hateful Eight", Helen Mirren for "Trumbo", Alicia Vikander for "Ex Machina" and Kate Winslet for "Steve Jobs".

But while these nominations are exciting, of course, it is important not to overlook that both of these award shows overshadow the Academy Awards (also known as the Oscars) which will broadcast on Feb 28 of 2016.

The Best Television Series - Musical or Drama category has "Casual Hulu", "Mozart In The Jungle", "Orange Is The New Black", "Silicon Valley", "Transparent" and "Veep" in neck-to-neck competition, while the Best Television Series - Drama will see shows like "Empire", "Game of Thrones", "Mr. Robot", "Narcos" and "Outlander" battling it out.

The nominations (via Variety) went to Orange is the New Black (2), Narcos (2), House of Cards, Grace & Frankie, Bloodline and Master of None.

Lady Gaga received her first Golden Globes nomination for a role in "American Horror Story: Hotel".

Best Supporting Actor puzzler: No one gets in for "Spotlight" but Idris Elba gets in for a good but not nomination-worthy turn in the unfortunately generic "Beasts of No Nation".
