Miss Universe host's mistake gives crown to wrong contestant

Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez thought she had won the Miss Universe pageant.

Colombia was the next to be called after Miss USA Olivia Jordan was announced the second runner up. He proceeded to take full responsiblity for the mistake, asking the crowd, "please don't hold it against the ladies".

"Unfortunately, a live telecast means that human error can come into play", the organizers said.

"It's okay Miss Colombia".

It was later on the Miss Universe's Snapchat account that the teleprompter had mistakenly said that Miss Colombia was the victor.

Harvey said it was his mistake and that he would take responsibility for not correctly reading the card, which said that contestant Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach of the Philippines was this year's victor and Colombia was actually the first runner-up.

When asked why she wanted to be Miss Universe, Wurtzbach replied that, "I will use my voice to influence the youth and I would raise awareness to certain causes like HIV awareness, that is timely and relevant to my country".

Australian Monika Radulovic failed to make the final three of the contest. The crown was put on her head and she walked around the stage, waving and smiling.

Contestants from Japan, Thailand, the Dominican Republic, Curacao and Venezuela aren't moving on to the question round.

The show is on stage inside the Planet Hollywood hotel-casino on the Las Vegas Strip. For the first time, viewers will have a chance to vote on the victor, rating each contestant in the swimwear, evening gown and interview competitions.
