Mystery Light Streaks Across The Sky, Lights Up Social Media

It's a bird, it's a plane, it's a... mystery?

There haven't been any reports of parts of the object hitting the ground.

The mysterious light seen moving across the night sky on Tuesday night was a fireball, an extremely bright meteor, Griffith Observatory confirmed.

So what was spotted in the sky on Tuesday?

Bob Pippin, director of the planetarium at the College of Southern Nevada, said the object was likely a meteor that broke apart as it entered the atmosphere.

Several aviation and weather officials said the light was not an aircraft, BuzzFeed reported.

Residents from across California and as far away as Las Vegas reported seeing a bright light in the sky Tuesday evening that an astronomer first called a "meteor" and a government official later clarified was sort of Russian space debris.

Vandenberg Air Force Base in California was tracking a Russian SL4 rocket body.

Thousands of people saw the light and sent them into a frenzy reminiscent of last month's Navy missile test that was seen in many states across the west coast.

Reports it was just a meteor has not stopped some however from speculating that these objects could have been UFOs - especially those who posted images on and .

The truth is out there.
