BART Officer Shot, Wounded in Hayward

A San Francisco Bay Area transit spokeswoman says a man's body was found inside a U-Haul truck that officers saw being pushed by 27-year-old Charles Goetting on Friday morning.

When the suspect walked away from the parking structure, the officer followed him as he walked on Grand Street, police said. The newspaper said authorities found a backpack with a ski mask and burglary tools inside the U-Haul, which had a switched license plate, and that the gun Goetting used had been stolen. "You just stop right now!" The wounded officer was escorted to a medical center by a police cruiser, and Goetting was air-flown to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley for surgery after being given CPR by Hayward emergency responders.

One officer was shot in the arm.

"There was a lot of blood", he said. The boy said he was so close that he able to see Goetting had, at least, two or three bullet wounds - on his hip and on his side. The suspect was then airlifted to a hospital and remains in stable condition. "He was kind of woozy".

As the Chronicle reports, per Deputy BART Police Chief Jeffrey Jennings' description, "Goetting cooperated at first, but when the officers asked him to put his arms above his head, he reached inside his waistband and pulled out a handgun".

The identity of the officers involved in the shooting was not released.

Police said Goetting will be charged with attempted murder. One of the conditions of his probation was that he must submit to a search by police on demand.

"You just be quiet!" the officer said.
