Jason Van Dyke greeted by cameras, scorn at criminal court

Van Dyke previously spent almost a week in custody after being arrested on first-degree murder charges on November 30, but has since been released on $1.5 million bond. Contrary to the Fraternal Order of Police account of what had transpired-that McDonald charged police officers who feared for their lives-the video showed that Laquan was walking away from the police when Van Dyke singularly shot the Black boy 16 times.

Van Dyke's attorney said he didn't think a special prosecutor was necessary, but that if the venue is moved there might be a different prosecutor.

The entire episode sparked days of protests in Chicago.

"We feel we can't get a fair trial in Cook County", McDonald's great uncle, Marvin Hunter, told reporters.

Last month, Van Dyke was charged with a single count of first degree murder, as the Chicago Tribune reported.

Defense attorney Dan Herbert says the noon hearing will be an opportunity for prosecutors to read the indictment. At least five police officers at the scene backed up Van Dyke in official police statements following the shooting.

The mayor has faced calls to resign from protesters who accuse City Hall, the police and the state's attorney of a cover-up because the city fought for months to keep the video from being released under the argument that doing so would hinder the investigation into the shooting.

A lawyer for a white Chicago policeman charged with homicide within the shooting death of a black teenager stated Friday. He'll seek an alter of venue, arguing in that feedback Mayor Rahm Emanuel made jeopardize his client's probabilities of an acceptable trial.

It has been a tough few weeks for Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel.

Emanuel's meeting came the morning after a visit by U.S. Justice Department officials with the interim Chicago police superintendent and command staff about policies and practices.

Emanuel initially characterized calls for a civil rights investigation as "misguided", on top of the federal probe already being conducted into the McDonald case, but later pledged the city's full cooperation.

The agency said last week that it would look at the police department's use of deadly force, among other issues.
