Apple Inc (AAPL) Wants More Money From Samsung

According to a court filing last week, Apple says it's owed supplemental damages for continued infringement, plus interest.

The two companies have been involved in multiple patent lawsuits since 2011 when Apple first sued Samsung in the USA for copying features of the iPhone.

Samsung and Apple are clearly trying to keep things moving along, but the war is far from over. This comes in a as a major surprise and was an unexpected move from Apple, as Samsung had readied to pay the previously asked sum. The jury eventually came to conclude that Samsung had infringed on a number of Apple patents. However, they reserved the right to a refund should the court find in their favor following the review. Now Apple has asked a USA court to force Samsung to cough up an additional $180 million.

Throw in about a million dollars in interest and you've got Apple's beef in a nutshell. The total number of units sold cost $180 million. Samsung has since appealed the latest case to the USA supreme court.

However, the Apple vs Samsung Saga does not end there. After the 2012 verdict, Samsung was ordered to pay $930 million (roughly Rs. 6,133 crores) to Apple.

In its Supreme Court appeal Samsung has argued that the large payment sets a precedent that could stifle innovation by heightening companies' fears of legal challenges. The firm stated Apple was compensated far more than it deserved for patents on designs of the iPhone's entrance face, bezel and software icons. Samsung is Apple's biggest supplier (A9 chipsets for iPhone 6s and 6s Plus being one of them) which places Apple as Samsung's important customer, contributing a sizeable part of its revenue from component sales.
