Opinion poll shows gains for Hillary Clinton in USA presidential race

If that margin held in a general election, that would not only deliver a Sanders-led Democratic Party the White House but also the House of Representatives and most likely the Senate, too.

Mr Trump (69) said last month that Ms Clinton (68) did not have strength or stamina to be president, and also has called her the worst US Secretary of State during her time in the post from 2009 to 2013. But she falls behind Ted Cruz by two points (Cruz 48 per cent to Clinton 46 per cent), and three points behind Marco Rubio (49 per cent Rubio to 46 per cent Clinton), the poll said.

On Wednesday, Clinton lashed out at Trump, telling the Des Moines Register, "I don't respond to him personally, because he thrives on that kind of exchange". "His bigotry, his bluster, his bullying have become his campaign". Among those interviewed after the debate, Clinton's lead grew to 60% vs. Sanders' 27%.

"Hillary Clinton tops him".

So, of course, Sanders commented after Trump said the following Monday night.

The poll found that 47 per cent of voters would back Ms Clinton if she faced Mr Trump in an election, who had support from 40 per cent of those polled. For results among the 414 registered voters who are Democrats or independents who lean toward the Democratic Party, the margin of sampling error is plus or minus 5 percentage points.

It is unclear what Trump means by his "be careful", but several hours later he released another one directed at Clinton, referring to the "death and destruction she caused".

It shows that she is unafraid of him, Democratic strategists said.

In a familiar pattern for Trump, he responded to fire - this time over a vulgarity he used in describing Clinton's 2008 primary loss - with fire.

Her campaign has been able to use the lull to build up its operation, organize key states, promote celebrity endorsements and roll out foreign policy initiatives and positions on infrastructure, manufacturing and taxes.

"We're the sideshow", said Paul Maslin, a Democratic pollster unaffiliated with either campaign.
