Attempted murder suspect killed by Las Vegas police was holding

Las Vegas police shot and killed a man suspected of attempted murder after mistaking his cell phone for a gun, authorities said in a statement.

Authorities say that Childress was being sought for multiple violent felonies in Arizona, including attempted murder.

Las Vegas police said Childress was also accused of attempted murder.

Police on Saturday said 37-year-old sergeant Robert Bohanon and 27-year-old officer Blake Walford had been placed on routine administrative leave.

Las Vegas police located Childress outside of a home just west of downtown Las Vegas, and were attempting to arrest him on Thursday afternoon. Police say that they instructed the suspect to drop the item, but he started walking towards them instead.

They, however, opened fire when he did not obey their commands.

Childress was found guilty of kidnapping, burglary, aggravated assault, armed robbery and theft.

Captain Matt McCarthy of the department's Office of Internal Oversight and Constitutional Policing said in a video statement that police "continually demanded" that the suspect drop his weapon before they opened fire.

Childress, who was pronounced dead on the scene, was not holding a gun, but a cellphone.

Hadfield says no officers, agents or bystanders were injured.

Steagall said that her son was in Vegas to visit his uncle and that police overreacted.

The two officers who shot him haven't been identified but they are expected to be named soon in line with department policy.

The mother and siblings of the Childress spoke with 8 News NOW. The incident happened around 2pm, police shoot 1 suspect, no officers hurt.
