Mitchell McClenaghan to undergo surgery as ball smashes through grille

For New Zealand, Henry Nicholls hit 82 and for Pakistan Mohammad Amir took three for 28.

He missed the slower ball and it snuck through the gap above the grill of his helmet, immediately felling the big fast bowler and lodging between the grill and his face.

Santner, who will be Worcestershire's overseas player in the NatWest T20 Blast, made 48 off 63 balls before he top edged Mohammad Irfan and was caught off a skier by keeper Sarfraz Ahmed.

10 batsmen Matt Henry and Mitchell McClenaghan had a 73 runs partnership for the ninth wicket as New Zealand were 209/7 in 45 overs and went on to score 71 runs in last five overs against Pakistani pacers. Pakistan so far have failed to have any impact on the ongoing tour till now but now will have to come up different mindset for the ODI series. Anwar Ali also took a double in quick succession when he broke a 45-run stand for the third wicket between Kane Williamson and Nicholls.

He bowled Williamson for 10 and two balls later bowled Elliott without scoring, before returning later to claim the prized scalp of Nicholls.

Despite missing McClenaghan's bowling services, Grant Elliott and Trent Boult picked up seven wickets amongst themselves to bowl the hosts to a 70-run win, defending 280.

McClenaghan had been having a good game, clearing the boundary twice and striking three fours.

Over the past 14 months, New Zealand have seen considerably more success than Pakistan in the 50-overs format of cricket, compiling a 17-8 record, including victories in all of their ICC World Cup matches previous year, until they finally fell to Australia in the final.

ESPNcricinfo reported that McClenaghan suffered a hairline fracture due to the blow and is set to undergo a minor cosmetic surgery in Auckland on Friday.
