Audi unveils new range-topping RS6 and RS7 ahead of February arrival

A particular highlight of the engine is an overboost function allowing the driver to temporarily draw on up to 750 Nm (553.2 lb-ft). As such, the RS7 and RS6 Avant benefit from ECU tuning and cranked-up turbocharger boost for an extra 45 horsepower, for a total of 605 ponies. Despite doing even greater justice to the RS badge by translating their 45PS and 50Nm output advantages into a supercar-challenging sprint time of just 3.7 seconds, the new RS performance models retain the same best-in-class fuel economy and efficiency figures as their "standard" equivalents.

That extra oomph came from a revised engine management unit, much like the Audi S8 Plus. Top speed is electronically limited to 155 miles per hour, but auto equipped with the optional dynamic package top out at almost 190 miles per hour. Like the normal RS6 and '7, the Performance versions get the famous Quattro four-wheel-drive system, which sends 40% of the power to the front and 60% to the rear, but the torque control system is capable of sending the grunt to whichever wheel it thinks has most grip.

And when you're in manual mode, a shift indicator in the driver information display - or the optional head-up display - tells you when to hook the next ratio. Changes are made via the selector lever or, as ever, steering wheel-mounted shift paddles.

The standard Audi RS 7 is already sold in the USA, meaning that its Performance variant has a stronger chance of reaching our shores than the Europe-only RS 6 wagon. A sport differential at the rear axle also helps direct torque between each of the rear wheels.

RS adaptive air suspension is standard on performance models, lowering the ride height by 20mm and continuously varying the damping according to road conditions, your driving style and the mode you've chosen in drive select.

Audi's systems engineers have also taken a leaf out of the superbike playbook by making the four internally ventilated brake discs ptal-shaped to reduce unsprung weight; carbon-ceramic discs are an option. Other modifications to the Performance models are subtle, and include 21-inch wheels, and matte titanium trim pieces for the front fascia. RS super sports seats with pronounced side bolsters and integrated head restraints are standard, and are upholstered in a black and blue Alcantara and leather combination with a honeycomb pattern and matching stitching on the armrests which also extends to the control elements and floor mats.
