El Chapo's brother-in-law detained in drug lord's July escape

Six people believed to be responsible for the prison break by Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, including the elusive Mexican drug lord's brother-in-law and the suspected mastermind of the escape, have been arrested.

"The Attorney General of the Republic reports that in recent hours before a jurisdictional authority various people who on July 11 assisted Joaquin Guzman Loera in the federal social rehabilitation centre no. 1 Antiplano", said Mexico's Attorney General, Arely Gomez. The person also purportedly relayed orders and payments to others involved in the escape. Guzman's brother-in-law is accused of organizing transportation and supervising the construction of the tunnel Guzman used to escape.

Once he made it through the milelong tunnel, Gomez said, Guzman traveled north about 140 kilometers (87 miles) on land to the city of San Juan del Rio, where two small planes were awaiting his arrival and took off from an airstrip.

The arrests come days after Mexican television channel Televisa broadcasted the CCTV footage of Guzman's escape, the longer version of a video authorities previously released but without sound and only showing the moments before Guzman disappeared.

Gomez did not name any of the suspects but said they planned, organised and carried out the jailbreak in cahoots with officials inside the maximum-security lockup.

About 23 prison officials and employees have also been arrested under suspicion of involvement in the case and a few face criminal charges, according to the media.

Guzman, the head of the Sinaloa drug cartel, escaped from a maximum security prison in July through a tunnel leading from the shower in his cell.

Guzman reportedly broke a leg and injured his face when he fell off the cliff, CNN added.

This development follows news that Mexican marines had found Mexico's most wanted drug trafficker in a remote mountainous area, but he got away. When they spotted Guzman without the child later on, special forces hunted him on foot.
