Fulton schools set to celebrate Red Ribbon week activities

Additionally, the Thurston Thrives Child and Youth Resilience action team, led by County Commissioner Sandra Romero and Liz Davis, chief executive officer of Northwest Venture Philanthropy, have identified the goals of reducing problem behaviors (like physical and emotional abuse, domestic violence, and substance abuse) and promoting individual and family resilience as ways to reduce the number of adverse childhood experiences and improve the overall health of our community and its residents.

Rugby school students are dressing up and pledging to be "drug-free" next week in honor of Red Ribbon Week.

It was during the aftermath of Camarena's tragic murder that the Red Ribbon campaign had its beginnings. Congressman Duncan Hunter and Camarena's high school friend Henry Lozano launched the "Camarena Club" in Camarena's hometown of Calexico, California.

And to top off the busy week, teachers will give students the chance to sign a pledge, committing to making healthy choices and resisting peer pressure.

Coroner Chuck Harris continued the program with a brief history of why the Red Ribbon campaign has been a mainstay in public schools for over 20 years with positive documented outcomes, before turning the mic over to TrautPoint0 Counselor Tracy Traut that concluded with empowering remarks. Within a few years, many other groups had adopted the practice, and now it is a nationwide observance.

At the October. 19 meeting of the Logan County Commission, PIECES Coalition director Jeremy Farley addressed the commission with the group's project to join the National Red Ribbon Week whereby people and their communities take a verifiable stand against drug abuse. The first Red Ribbon Week celebrations were held in La Mirada and Norwalk, California. "[We're] not just pushing 'Don't do drugs because they're bad.' [we're pushing] 'Don't do drugs because you respect yourself ad want to be the best person you can be'". After his death at the hands of cartel members, those mourning him chose to wear red ribbons in his memory. Wear your red ribbon and armbands with pride. On Tuesday the theme is "A Minion Reasons to be Drug-Free".
