Stolen vehicle sparks Frederick police-involved shooting

Police say a man rammed an unmarked police auto before he was fatally shot by a Maryland State Police trooper in Frederick.

Cops believe the dead man deliberately rammed the Frederick police officer's auto in the parking lot of a Sheetz gas station, Maryland State Police spokesman Greg Shipley said, according to the Frederick News-Post. A trooper from the state's aviation command came from a nearby hanger to the parking lot, and the two troopers watched the SUV.

The suspect was killed and a Frederick City officer was injured after Maryland State police boxed in a vehicle that was wanted from an armed robbery and auto theft incident in Baltimore.

Baltimore police reported that when the auto was stolen Sunday, the thief showed the owner a handgun in his waistband and told him to back off, Shipley said. It's not clear if the man who was shot by police was the same person who stole the SUV, he said. The fleeing driver jumped out of the his vehicle before the cars stopped moving. When they approached with their emergency lights on, the man got into the driver's side of the SUV, Shipley said.

No further details have been released.

"And as soon as [the man] got out of the SUV, [the trooper] told him to freeze and unloaded on him", Kline said. The officers shouted for the suspect to stop, and at a few point, one of the troopers fired his weapon. Rescuers arrived and pronounced the man dead on the scene. The case is under investigation.

The Frederick officer was taken to a hospital. His condition was not immediately known.
