Arrest made after stray bullet grazes 8-year-old

"She said, 'My baby got shot'".

Neighbors said Wednesday the girl grazed by the bullet was 9 years old, but authorities clarified Thursday she was 8.

A police shootout in New Jersey that injured two people in Asbury Park, including a little girl, is under investigation.

Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher Gramiccioni has said Allen ran off during a "lawful investigatory stop" by McGhee Wednesday. She was treated at a nearby hospital and released.

Girl 9 Struck by Bullet Fired Outside Asbury Park Home

Gramiccioni did not say whose bullet hit the girl, adding that it remains under investigation.

Neighbors and community leaders on Thursday afternoon were still in shock as they recalled the moments after the shooting.

In fact, said the landlord of the home, who is trained in firearm use, if the bullet had hit even a hair's breadth differently, the result may have been far worse. "You can't be safe in your own home".

The officer fired back, and at least one bullet went through the wall of the house where Cassie Jones was watching TV, and grazed the girl across her forehead.

Asked whether the officer was right to fire back at the suspect, Gramiccioni said: "It's consistent with police protocol to try to extinguish a threat when somebody's firing at an officer in the neighborhood like this". McGhee is a full-time Asbury Park police officer. Gramiccioni said he couldn't comment on whether Allen was known to McGhee.

Allen then took off on foot and McGhee chased him through a dirt field adjacent to an abandoned building. The suspect was also taken to a hospital. Monmouth County prosecutors office is investigating. McGhee is on a paid leave of absence.

The prosecutor is asking, meanwhile, that anyone with any information about the incident call Detective Mike Bonano at .
