India trail by 134 runs at end of Day 1

AB de Villiers marked his 100th Test with a stroke-filled 85 to revive struggling South Africa on the opening day of the second Test against India in Bangalore on Saturday.

As such, India trailed by only 134 runs, with Shikhar Dhawan going strong on 45, and Murali Vijay more sedate on 28 not out.

Ravichandran Ashwin was once again among the wickets on day one of the second Test against South Africa in Bengaluru.

India are 1-0 up in the four-Test series after winning the opening match in Mohali by 108 runs. The fall of De Villiers brought about the tea interval as India remained on top.

With Aaron working up good pace, it was a few anxious time for the South Africans as 50 came up in the 17th over. Making his half century in just 59 balls de Villiers went on tohit 11 exquisite boundaries and a huge six off Ravichandran Ashwin whotormented the South African batsmen taking three for 53.

Ashwin also felt that the pitch in Bangalore was not completely conducive to the spinners but credited Jadeja for bowling well in the second session.

JP Duminy (15) could not shine on his return to the squad and edged Ashwin to slip while Dane Vilas (15) gave Jadeja a return catch to depart. "My current form ... people are comparing me to other players, but all I really want is for us to win games of cricket", de Villiers had said before the match. The Tamil Nadu tweaker was introduced into the attack in the 8th over after Stuart Binny could hardly trouble the openers after being entrusted with the duty of sharing the new ball with Ishant. India's desire to build substantially on their first day's score of 80/0 faces a potential obstruction if one were to go by forecast for the next two days. The third umpire confirmed that the low catch was clean, but did not contemplate whether de Villiers had hit the ball. Ashwin picked up two wickets in his first over when he trapped Stiaan van Zyl (10) leg-before with the batsman playing down the wrong line before Faf du Plessis (0) was superbly caught by Cheteshwar Pujara. Elgar scored a stubborn 38 off deliveries but he was bowled by Jadeja off the second ball after lunch.
