Myanmar Election Results 2015: Aung San Suu Kyi Won With Majority

Earlier, Suu Kyi sent letters to President Thein Sein, Commander-in-Chief Min Aung Hlaing as well as influential parliamentary speaker Shwe Mann, calling for "national reconciliation" talks next week. "It is crucial for the dignity of the nation that the people's will, which was shown in the election of November 8, be truly implemented in a peaceful and stable manner", she wrote in the letter, which was dated Tuesday.

"Our message to the people of the country on behalf of U Thein Sein is that President U Thein Sein wants to congratulate the Myanmar people for the free and fair and very peaceful election day", U Ye Htut said.

"We would like to congratulate the National League for Democracy because it is leading in the election results", the army said in the statement.

Shwe Mann, who said in an online statement he would meet Suu Kyi, was the head of the ruling USDP until August, when he was relieved of his position and escorted from his offices by security guards, possibly over his moves to ally with Suu Kyi.

"Our government will respect the people's decision and choice and will hand over power as scheduled", President Thein Sein also pledged in a post on .

The army simply swatted away that result and tightened its grip on the country, jailing dissidents and confining Suu Kyi to house arrest. Suu Kyi has been criticized for her silence on the Rohingya issue, and a few rights groups say Myanmar has a "poisoned atmosphere" towards Muslims that could easily lead to further clashes between hardline Buddhist monks and minority religious groups.

If the NLD secures a two-thirds majority of the parliamentary seats at stake - a likely scenario now - it would gain control over the executive posts under Myanmar's complicated parliamentary-presidency system.

Results so far gave Suu Kyi's party 196 of 243 seats declared out of the 330 seats not allocated to the military in the lower house.

The opposition has also taken 29 out of 33 seats announced in the upper house.

When drafting the 2008 Constitution, the army did their math, setting out that 25% of parliamentary seats must be appointed by the military, and then requiring that any constitutional amendment have 75% support.

Suu Kyi has showered Kawhmu with over $4 million in development aid from donors, disbursed by the Daw Khin Kyi Foundation - a charity set up in honour of her mother.

Win Htein, spokesman of the NLD said the release of the results was intentionally delayed by the election commission.

Ms Suu Kyi - known simply as The Lady by many - is barred from becoming president but has said she would be the power behind the new leader.

In interviews on Tuesday she made it clear she would be calling the shots for a president chosen by her party, who would have no authority.

The government, which remains beholden to the military, is led by President Thein Sein, a former general who has been praised for initiating political and economic reforms to end Myanmar's isolation and jump-start its moribund economy.

The surprising accusation added a worrying twist to what had been an amicable election, with the ruling party appearing to be taking its expected loss gracefully after the Sunday vote.

Although Suu Kyi reached out to the military establishment for reconciliation talks, she has become increasingly defiant on the presidential clause as the scale of her victory has become apparent.
