United States urges Myanmar to change constitution barring Suu Kyi rule

Suu Kyi's party will now lead the Myanmar after a historic elections in 2015.Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy won by 348 seats 19more than the 329 required for absolute majority in mayanmar's this was the first free elections in 25 years.

"There is much hard work that remains ahead on Myanmar's democratic journey and towards making future elections truly inclusive".

Mr Obama also called President Thein Sein to congratulate Burma on its success in conducting the election and the importance of respecting the outcome.

Suu Kyi, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, has spent decades under military-imposed house arrest, and she insisted she would lead the country anyway if her party won.

She resumed her political career immediately upon her release and shortly after commenced discussions with the junta about registering her party to join elections and the role she could play in the country's politics. The tally from Sunday's vote is still being counted and the election commission is expected to complete the announcement of the results within days.

The USDP effectively conceded defeat Wednesday, with President Thein Sein sending Ms. Suu Kyi's party a letter of congratulations.

Suu Kyi has been criticized for not speaking out against abuses faced by the Muslim minority.

"We have consistently said over the course of the last several years that a full transition to democratic, civilian rule in Burma would require a process of constitutional reform", said senior Obama foreign policy aide Ben Rhodes.

Their conciliatory messages appeared to end lingering fears that the military might overturn the result, as it did when the NLD won a previous election by a landslide in 1990.

Myanmar's president runs the executive, with the exception of the powerful ministries of interior, defence and border security, which are controlled by the military.

The military and the largest parties in the upper house and the lower house will each nominate a candidate for president.

According to New Zimbabwe.com, Ncube said this in a congratulatory message to Myanmar's opposition leader, Aung San Suu Kyi.

After decades of defiance, Myanmar's indomitable democracy champion Aung San Suu Kyi now stands on the cusp of government, an worldwide symbol of resistance in the face of brutal authoritarianism. The victor becomes president, the runner-up is first vice president and the third placed becomes number two vice president.

It is going to take months to make the transition and to swear in a new government, find a president and appoint a cabinet, none of whom will have a hand in governance before in their lives.

The military, fearing Suu Kyi's influence as the daughter of a national hero, placed her under house arrest in 1989.
