Every Tesla Model S is being recalled

About two weeks ago, Tesla said, a customer in Europe reported that her seat belt disconnected when she turned to talk to rear passengers. There was no damage, crash, or injury involved, but with the success of electric vehicles still tenuous and Tesla leading the charge, they're not taking any chances. Tesla is challenging the entrenched model of USA auto sales by doing away with conventional dealerships, and it has a refreshingly open attitude toward licensing its intellectual property. The company installed a plate underneath the battery pack better to protect the cells.

Model S owners are asked to bring the cars to a service center to have the seat belts checked.

Our records indicate you own a Model S affected by this voluntary recall.

But it now plans to recall and inspect every Model S sold worldwide - approximately 90,000 vehicles - to "make absolutely sure that they are properly connected". However, those concerned with their seat belt's safety can detect the condition by "very firmly" pulling on the lap portion of their seat belts with at least 80 pounds of force. In 2014, the company recalled 29,000 Model S wall chargers.

A spokesperson for Tesla Motors explained that the bolt connecting the outboard lap pre-tensioner, which pulls the seatbelt tight in case of an accident, was not assembled properly.

"We expect the vast majority of seat belts to be fine, but out of an abundance of caution, we want to take a look", a Tesla spokesman told reporters today.

Model 3, whose price is estimated at $35,000 - half the cost of other Teslas - is seen as key to expansion for the carmaker, which has a loyal following among well-heeled buyers (Other OTC: - ).

The Model S earned the maximum 5-star safety rating from NHTSA.

It's technically the largest recall in the upstart company's short history.

Of course shares of Tesla fell (down 1.9%) once the news broke of the recall, which is too bad because the recall can only help the companies reputation.
