Two pilots killed in USA army helicopter crash in South Korea

Police say a USA military helicopter has crashed in South Korea, killing two people on board.

Wonju Fire Department rescuers were the first to arrive on the scene, and a contact at the department said they had discovered the two dead bodies inside the destroyed helicopter. It said a pilot was one of those killed, and the cause of the crash is under investigation. The helicopter belongs to the U.S. Second Infantry Division.

The identities of both pilots aren't public yet, as the families have to be notified first.

The investigators suspected that the attack helicopter hit a high-voltage line or a steel tower in the foggy weather.

There were no reports of additional victims on the ground. Local eyewitnesses confirmed they heard a loud bang before seeing a burning aircraft crashing down to earth.

This news agency also reported that a power line was among the wreckage left after the crash, and that the top of the tower was damaged.

South Korea and North Korea remain technically at war and about 28,500 American soldiers are based out of South Korea.

USA troops regularly participate in military drills with their South Korean counterparts in order to be prepared for renewed conflict with North Korea.
