Thanksgiving food to keep away from pets

The Humane Society advises pet owners to only feed their canine or feline partners what they are used to eat, trying not to change their diet not even during the holidays, no matter how tempting would it be to give in to those puppy eyes.

A veterinarian office in Springfield says their waiting room fills up fast on Black Fridays with pets who ate something they shouldn't have during Thanksgiving.

The darker the chocolate is, the more toxic it can be to your pets.

Thanksgiving is the time of year where family and friends get together to give thanks and enjoy some really good food.

She suggests you explain to Thanksgiving guests that you don't want your pet to eat human food, and keep the pets away from the dinner table until the food is put away.

"Vomiting, diarrhea with or without blood, very lethargic, and when you pick them up they can hardly stand for you to touch their stomach" Mayfield said.

Among the foods that are usually given to pets during the holidays without knowing that they may be harmful, are: rosemary and sage, raw onion and garlic, butter and milk, and fruits such as grapes and raisins, as these could cause, besides the upset stomach, kidney failures and damages to the central nervous system.

Turkey is a big "no" too when it comes to feeding your pet, since just as chicken bones, turkey bones could splinter into sharp chips, causing bleeding, bowel obstruction or blocking the animal's throat. Ham tends to be high in fat as well, which can lead to obesity in pets.

Dr. Scott said if your pets eat grapes or raisins, call a vet immediately.

Your pet may seem lethargic and quiet, then comes the vomiting.

Rich and fatty foods, unfortunately, can cause serious abdominal issues for pets. Keep chocolate pie and all chocolate desserts out of the reach of pets to prevent an emergency trip to the veterinarian.
