5 top categories with likely conquerors at Screen Actors Guild Awards 2016

The show has also been nominated for "Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble", which they stand a good chance of winning, given the fact that the show's stunt team has taken home a trophy every year since 2012 (the first year it was eligible for the SAG Awards).

The newspaper thriller "Spotlight", which leads most Oscar polls, was also nominated for its ensemble as well as a best supporting actress turn by Rachel McAdams. Jennifer Lawrence in Joy and Quentin Tarantino's Hateful Eight cast, both SAG no-shows, could be explained by the films' late release (both in theaters Christmas Day) and limited screenings.

Nominations for the awards were announced on Wednesday, bringing a murky awards season into a bit more focus. Everyone who was nominated was definitely deserving, and there were a few performances that were deserving who weren't nominated.

"Steve Jobs" stars Michael Fassbender and Kate Winslet also land a nod each for best actor and best supporting actress respectively and so do "The Danish Girl" pair Eddie Redmayne and Alicia Vikander. However, its other cast members, including Michael Keaton and Mark Ruffalo, weren't selected in either the lead actor or supporting actor categories. On Monday, the African-American Film Critics Association named the N.W.A drama their best of the year, but it's been mostly overlooked by other critics' awards.

As indicators of which actors will get Academy Award nominations, 17 of the 20 SAG Award nominees past year were also nominated for the Oscar, according to the New York Daily News.

Hollywood's lack of diversity has become of critical concern following last Oscar's all-white acting slate.

Otto is nominated with her Homeland cast in the TV drama ensemble category against Mad Men, House of Cards, Game of Thrones and Downton Abbey. Between now and the start of voting for Oscar noms on December 30, Open Road may have to more clearly throw its support behind some members of its ensemble for individual acting noms.

On the comedy series front, the nominated actresses are Uzo Aduba ("Orange Is the New Black"); Edie Falco who picked up her record-setting 22nd nod for "Nurse Jackie"; Ellie Kemper ("Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt"); 17-time nominee Julia Louis-Dreyfus ("Veep") and Amy Poehler ("Parks and Recreation").

It would be great to see cast of Beasts of No Nation win the SAG Award and for Elba to leave both ceremonies with an armload of awards.
