Chicago protesters stage 'die-in' at City Hall

City officials have released a number of revealing authorities encounters with the public, since dashcam footage revealing a white Chicago police officer shooting a black teenager 16 times was made public.

The "die-in" lasted 16 minutes, one minute for each time 17-year-old McDonald was shot by a Chicago police officer last year.

It was New York University student Rachel Brown who created the Facebook event, "" last week, according to The .

Emanuel spoke of black residents' mistrust of Chicago police, saying it's unacceptable that some officers treat black people - particularly young men - differently from how whites are treated, and that there are parents in Chicago who feel they must warn their children to be wary of officers. Police said immediately after the shooting that Johnson pointed a weapon in the direction of the pursuing officers. "I'm the mayor. I own it. I take responsibility for what happened because it happened on my watch", he said, adding, "If we're going to fix it, I want you to understand it's my responsibility with you". Officers who saw Van Dyke shoot at McDonald portrayed the teenager as much more menacing than he appeared on screen.

Lamon Reccord is taken into custody by Chicago police officers during a march calling for Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel and Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez to resign Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2015, in Chicago.

"I could not come through until I produced identification even though my picture was on the wall", she said. He also said the city will reopen some cases in which the oversight agency declared police shootings justified.

But that reckoning of what went wrong is not what followed in the rest of Emanuel's speech, which otherwise hewed to talking points about gun violence and gang activity reminiscent of his May inaugural address and re-hashed announcements he's already made in the wake of the policing scandal.

Coleman died a few hours later at Roseland Community Hospital, officially from an allergic reaction to sedatives he was given while undergoing treatment. We're exhausted of all of the police brutality.

Finally, Mayor Emanuel addressed what every Chicagoan can do to make communities safer, explaining that we cannot ask community members to respect police officers if police officers do not respect them in kind. Like some of the city's other black elected officials, Rush, who has been involved in protesting the police department's handling of the McDonald case, has a bit of a personal stake in Emanuel's survival. Chicago police have said that Johnson resisted arrest when officers responded to the call of shots fired and then ran.

Also on Wednesday, a federal judge said he would rule by January 14 on whether to release video in the shooting death of another black teen. The Justice Department is now conducting a separate probe into the conduct of the Chicago Police Department.

Coleman, a University of Chicago graduate, suffered from mental illness and was arrested after he began acting erratically and his family called the police, hoping they would help get him to a mental hospital.

Later, protesters gathered outside the Archdiocese of Chicago's mansion where activist Mark Carter eulogized the demonstration and announced plans for Thursday.

But she won't be back there for another two weeks, she said.

Among the systemic problems with police, Emanuel aimed particular criticism at the "code of silence" that keeps police officers from reporting misconduct by fellow officers.
