SAG, Golden Globe nominations further shape Oscar race

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association is known for playing by its own mysterious rules, and this year's Golden Globe nominations proved no exception.

The SAG and Globe nominations this week sent the Hollywood awards season into full gear, with Tinseltown headed for the Oscars on February 28. It was nominated for best picture, as well as best drama, best original score and Leonardo DiCaprio, who stars in it, is one of the Golden Globe nominees for best actor. Despite this perceived advantage, 2015 marks the first time in 10 years that the network has not led the Golden Globes nominations race. In fact, for best television series (musical or comedy), only one linear show (HBO's Veep) was among the nominees.

Two of Amazon.com's original video series, transgender comedy Transparent and behind-the-scenes classical music series Mozart in the Jungle, earned five nods.

Series co-creator Ryan Murphy also took to to congratulate Gaga as well as Jamie Lee Curtis for her nomination in the category of Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series - Musical or Comedy for "Scream Queens".

"The Big Short", which takes a unusual take a look at the housing bubble collapse that led to the 2008 D.R. recession, led the comedy nominees with 4 nods; greatest comedy, screenplay and actor for Christian Bale and Steve Carell.

That also means that the Golden Globes and the Emmys are able to expand their nominees to them as TV shows and can award them the same awards they previously only gave to on-air networks, given they were the only ones in the distant past that aired original content.

In-demand Fassbender is in the running for Best Performance by an actor in a Motion Picture for his performance in "Steve Jobs".

"There is a wide range here when you've got "Carol, ' which is this 1952 romance, or a film like "Brooklyn, ' and then you've got 'Mad Max" and 'The Martian" which are big spectacles", he told AFP.

The nominees for best TV drama are Empire, Game of Thrones, Mr. Robot, Narcos, and Outlander.

Even another Netflix show, "House of Cards", was snubbed. His third time in the gig follows three straight years of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler as hosts. It is also the first nomination for Sarah Hay, who stars as Claire Robbins in "Flesh and Bone" and is a soloist dancer now for Semperoper Ballett in Dresden, Germany after dancing professionally in the United States for four years and training at the School of American Ballet and the American Ballet Theatre.

"The big made-for-Oscars studio contenders are falling out", I'Neil stated, citing Focus Features' "The Danish Girl", Universal Pictures' "Steve Jobs" and Disney's Tom Hanks film "Bridge of Spies".

While Mark Ruffalo is in the Golden Globe mix for Best Actor Musical/Comedy he has not been recognised for his performance in Spotlight... instead it is his turn in Infinitely Polar Bear for which he has picked up the nod.

On the television front, no single series stood out from the pack, with six earning three Globes nominations each - "American Crime", "Fargo", "Mr. Robot", "Outlander", "Transparent", and "Wolf Hall".

On Thursday, the Golden Globes nominations were announced, and shook things up a bit.
