Abortion Clinic Accused: 'I'm Warrior For Babies'

Dear admitted in court on Wednesday he was guilty of killing three and wounding nine at a Planned Parenthood Clinic in Colorado Springs last month.

Robert Lewis Dear, 57, has been held without bond since surrendering to police at the end of a bloody five-hour siege on November 27 that authorities said began when he opened fire with a rifle in front of the clinic, then stormed inside. "I am a warrior for the babies", and, "Protect the babies". The hearing on Wednesday was scheduled to be a formal filing of charges against Dear.

King appeared to be trying to follow the same playbook he used in his defense of Colorado theater shooter James Holmes, whom he convinced a jury earlier this year to spare from execution on the grounds of his mental illness.

A jury in that case sentenced Holmes to life in prison rather than death.

Rick Sallinger, a local CBS reporter, relayed more of Dear's interruptions on : "You'll never know the amount of blood I saw in that place" and "Seal the truth, kill the babies, that's what Planned Parenthood does". "He is the lawyer for the Batman shooter, when they drugged him all up and that's what they want to do to me", Dear said. Family of the victims were inside courtroom when Dear shouted "I'm guilty, there's no trial. Kill the babies, that's what Planned Parenthood does", Dear said. Chandler said Dear's outbursts helped him better understand the suspect.

Mr. Dear, 57, has been described by relatives and neighbors as a loner with an antigovernment worldview, and as a person who has expressed extreme anti-abortion views, according to an ex-wife and others.

After the outbursts, Dear's lawyer quickly raised the issue of his client's mental state and whether he was fit to stand trial, telling the judge: "I think the problem is obvious".

A portrait of Dear emerged after the shooting, depicting an isolated man who entertained survivalist ideas and had rambled to police about "baby parts" after his arrest. During a discussion about sealing documents, Dear spoke up again. "Can you add that to the list?"

It was the first deadly assault on a USA abortion provider since 2009.

Dear could face the death penalty, but prosecutors have not decided whether to seek the death penalty, and that would not occur until after Dear is arraigned, May said.
