Former officer Daniel Holtzclaw found guilty on 18 of 36 charges

Actress Jada Pinkett Smith, who has become an activist in her own right speaking out against human trafficking, tweeted Friday a few simple but meaningful hashtags in apparent solidarity with Holtzclaw's victims, putting a spin on the Black Lives Matter social activism phrase that rose to prominence previous year. He selected women that he thought would never report the crime, and promised to drop drug charges in exchange for sexual favors. He faces 36 counts of rape, sexual battery and other charges.

Prosecutors alleged that Holtzclaw inappropriately touched the girl while driving her to her mother's house.

Ranging in age from 17 to 57, all but one is black and all live in the same poverty-stricken, predominantly black neighborhood in the northeast section of the city.

For each of the 36 counts, the jurors, who were all white, were tasked with both determining the verdict and, in the case of a guilty verdict, recommending a sentence. Holtzclaw's youngest victim was 17 years old and he raped her on her mother's porch.

"He didn't choose CEOs or soccer moms; he chose women he could count on not telling what he was doing", McConnell said of the former police officer during the closing arguments of a trial that drew national attention, according to Reuters.

For example, Ferguson, Mo., Officer Darren Wilson wasn't held accountable for killing Michael Brown in October 2014, and neither were New York City police officers after Eric Garner's choking death in July 2014.

Police said they used the Global Positioning System in Holtzclaw's auto and police databases to confirm he had been in contact with numerous women.

They said he did this because he did not think authorities would take the victims' word over his if he had to defend himself against sexual assault allegations.

Some women testified that he would escort them home and assault them there, intimidating them into performing sex acts, or drive them to secluded locations to rape them. "I felt like I was in survivor mode, so I had to do what he was making me do", Sade Hill said.

Oklahoma County District Attorney David Prater said after the verdict that Holtzclaw's attorneys were responsible for ensuring there was an all-white jury considering the case.

However, he said that does not take away from the victims' strength to come forward.

"It may mean that we didn't meet our burden (of proof) in those counts", he said. This, coupled with defense attorney Scott Adams' repeated attacks on the credibility of the victims, several of whom had previous convictions for drug or prostitution offenses, while painting Holtzclaw as an "all American good guy", prompted many to trend the hashtag "BlackWomenMatter". He then told her to sit in the backseat of his squad vehicle, where he stood over her and told her to perform oral sex. "I couldn't believe what was going on was really going on".

That woman testified in orange scrubs and handcuffs because she had been jailed on drug charges hours before appearing in court. He could spend the rest of his life in prison, based on the jury's recommendation he serve 263 years.

In the first pool of 24 potential jurors, there were three black men, but they were not picked for the jury. Both the judge in the case and the lead prosecutor say it's the longest deliberation in any case in which they've been involved.
