CDC reports new Chipotle E. coli cases from November

Those cases were linked to norovirus, and Chipotle has said they were unrelated to the E. coli outbreak.

"We have indicated before that we expected that we may see additional cases stemming from this, and CDC is now reporting some additional cases", the spokesman said.

The United States Centers for Disease Control (CDC) on Tuesday said that the E. coli outbreak which was linked with the rotisserie chicken salad sold by warehouse club operator Costco Wholesale Corp seems to be over now. In its latest update, the CDC reports there has been one more case in Pennsylvania of someone getting sick from E. coli. The company unveiled a new food safety plan in December in partnership with IEH Laboratories and Consulting Group in Seattle that includes repeated testing of freshly prepared ingredients, improved employee training and extra precautions during preparation such as blanching fresh greens in boiling water for a few seconds to kill bacteria.

The CDC said it was not including the five new cases to the count for the October outbreak. Earlier this month Chipotle CEO and founder Steve Ells went on national TV to apologize for the recent spate of illnesses and vowed to make the company's restaurants the safest places to eat by going above and beyond the industry's best practices for food safety.

Five of the 19 sickened people were hospitalized and two developed a type of kidney failure associated with the E. coli strain, STEC O157:H7, the CDC said.

"While it is never possible to completely eliminate all risk, this program eliminates or mitigates risk to a level near zero, " he said earlier this month.

Since August, Chipotle has been mired in one food safety issue after another.

It is noted that Chipotle's stock suffered a 20 percent decline in stocks after the outbreak; however, shares went up by 3.6 percent at $567.71 in premarket trading following Ells' appearance in Today. It is imperative to state that post the outbreak the company had assured customers that it would tighten its food safety standards.

On Oct. 31, an outbreak of E. coli was first linked to the chain, mostly in Washington and Oregon.
