Obama says he'll attend Detroit auto show later this month

Are you headed to the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit?

Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton also will be in Detroit on Tuesday to host a fundraiser at the same hotel where many media members and auto executives will stay during the show.

The show opens to the public on Saturday, Jan. 16.

It's January, so it must be time for the biggest auto show of them all to pull into the Motor City.

"I believe that every American should be proud of what our most iconic industry has done", Obama said.

He said when the crisis came several years ago, he wouldn't turn his back on Detroit.

In the address Obama, who is in his past year in office, crowed about economic growth and progress during his presidency, including "more than 14 million new jobs" as well as slashing the federal deficit and a major expansion of health care coverage. The plan was initiated under president George W. Bush, but Obama largely oversaw the bailout.

Obama said the plan wasn't popular with critics even calling it a "road to socialism". He says he'd make the same bet again any day of the week. The stop at the show is part of a trip to Detroit to highlight the revival of the city and the auto industry since the $85 million auto industry bailout.

A statement from Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan's office said, "The president and administration have been great friends to the city of Detroit, and we look forward to showing him our progress".

Automakers are allocated space based on an equation that takes into account market share, number of brands and new products being launched, said Max Muncey, spokesman for the Detroit Auto Dealers Association which produces the event.
