Multi-Vehicle Crash on I-74 in Dearborn County

Sgt. Stephen Wheeles with the Indiana State Police said there were two separate crashed that totaled 40 different vehicles.

As many as 30 vehicles have been involved in a pileup Tuesday morning on a snowy in interstate, according to local reports.

The accident occurred near mile marker 168, close to the Indiana/Ohio border.

About 40 counties across the state issued travel advisories or watches because of road conditions.

The roadway was shut down in both directions at exit 164 and could remain closed for several hours, authorities said.

There were injuries reported, but police were still gathering information about the severity of the crashes. "People lose visibility and then they start slowing down".

The trouble began when a vehicle and a semi slammed into each other on Interstate 70 near Richmond, Fox 59 reported.

"It's a mess", Wheeles said in a telephone interview several hours after the first crash. Westbound drivers are being diverted onto US 35 and being instruction to take State Road 1.
